The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, MA, is a private, independent, not-for- profit corporation dedicated to research and higher education at the frontiers. They are the 2nd largest oceanographic institute in the world.
Ships & Technology:
While the ships may be out to see, it is often common to see one or more of them tied to the docks. These are the same ships you have seen on the Titanic discoveries, History Channel and Discovery Channels. The ships are the Atlantis, Knorr, Oceanus, and Tioga are the Institution’s main research vessels. WHOI also builds and operates a group of vehicles designed for ocean exploration. These include Alvin, Jason, and ABE.

Right next door is the world renowned Marine Biological Laboratory or "MBL" for short.
The Marine Biological Laboratory is an international center for research, education, and training in biology, biomedicine, and ecology. Learn about our facilities, our community, and why Lewis Thomas called us America's "National Biological Laboratory." If your child wants to be a marine biologist, this is the top place for grad students in the field.
*Please note, these are working facilities. They are not open for tours, but you can wander around the buildings and some of the docks. There is a great small aquarium with hands-on stuff for the kids in town.
